Chin Recontouring
Facial Feminization Surgery can change chin shape through either shaving or implants. Chin shape varies widely between males and females, so it is extremely important in gender recognition. The male chin is wider and higher. The female chin tends to be more narrow, pointed and shorter. Facial Feminization Surgery can modify the chin to improve facial appearance and feminize the lower face. This procedure may require a small implant, extensive bone cuts or repositioning.
How Chin Recontouring Is Done
- Chin Shaving: This Facial Feminization Surgery procedure is called a "sliding genioplasty." The chin is cut from front to back, separating a horseshoe-shape of bone. This piece can be moved forward or backward to correct a receding or protruding chin. Another section of bone can be completely removed making the chin shorter. The cut angle affects the final height of the chin.
- Chin Implants or Bone-Filler Paste: This facial feminization surgery of the chin uses a paste to correct a receding chin. The incision is made in the lower gums.
Chin Recontouring Recovery
- With an implant, recovery time may be two or three days.
- Extensive bone procedures may require four to five weeks to heal.
- Patients can usually return to usual activity, except for heavy exercise, within five to six days of surgery.
- Tape may be placed to help hold the implant in the proper position for several days.
